Kopec, White & Spooner Attorneys at Law deliver over 80 years combined experience handling a wide array of family law matters in Springfield, Sangamon County and throughout Central Illinois.

Each family law case is unique to the parties involved.  Some clients are interested in a quick, negotiated settlement of a divorce or legal separation.  For some clients, a declaration of invalidity of the marriage (sometimes referred to as an “annulment”) is appropriate.

An evaluation of the financial circumstances of the parties (the marital estate) is a necessary part of any divorce case.  The lawyers of Kopec, White & Spooner assist their clients in analyzing an appropriate equitable distribution of that marital estate.  Where there is a wide gap in the earnings of the parties, maintenance (also referred to as “spousal support” or “alimony”) may be an appropriate consideration, and Kopec, White & Spooner Attorneys at Law have the experience necessary to provide their clients with guidance and counsel on that issue.

When there are children involved, whether the matter is a divorce case or a paternity case, issues arise as to child custody, visitation and child support.  Kopec, White & Spooner Attorneys at Law has significant experience in presenting these issues to courts in Springfield, Sangamon County and throughout central Illinois.  Some parties can reach a settlement of issues related to their children, and in those situations the lawyers of Kopec, White & Spooner can provide the parties with an appropriate Joint Parenting Agreement, or appropriate terms to provide for an award of sole custody if that is the parties’ agreement.  Occasionally, the parties resolve issues related to their children after they have gone through child custody mediation, and that, too, can result in a Joint Parenting Agreement or other documentation of the parties’ agreement.

There are, however, occasions when the parties are unable to agree and there are contested child custody and visitation issues, and in those circumstances, lawyers Mike Kopec, Dave White and Scott Spooner stand ready to state their client’s case in court.

It is common for post-judgment issues to arise in divorce cases in Springfield, Sangamon County and central Illinois, such as for modification of child support, a petition to change custody of a minor child, a request for removal (where the custodial parent moves the residence with the child out-of-state) and consideration of college educational expenses, and the lawyers of Kopec, White & Spooner are available for and routinely provide representation with respect to these issues.

“Family Law” also includes adoption.  Whether the adoption is through a private placement or a parent seeks a related-party adoption of a child by a new spouse, Kopec, White & Spooner Attorneys at Law bring experience to the table which can assist its clients in completing this process effectively.

The attorneys of Kopec, White & Spooner also have experience in preparing (or reviewing) pre-nuptial agreements, with an eye toward ensuring that those agreements both accurately reflect and effectively administer the intentions of their clients.
